The Top 10 Survey ...Here's your chance to vote for your favourite Sci-Fi films and television programmes. In addition, as scientists, we are curious whether a formula exists for producing great Sci-Fi. In other words, what is it that's common across all the very best Sci-Fi out there. We think we have the answer. Our first thought was that it needed a great plot, but on closer inspection there are some classic Sci-Fi with terrible plot lines. OK, we know that there are also classic Sci-Fi with terrific plot lines, such as HG Wells War of the Worlds and The Day the Earth Stood Still for example, but it does not seem to be essential. If you think about it, most of the common plot lines centre around a familiar struggle against the odds of some kind or other and are usually not that deep. We have worked out that to really make Sci-Fi work you really only need three things: 1. A devious villain that the audience will love to hate, such as Darth Vader or the Daleks 2.
