Science Fiction vs Science Fact

A fact is described as something that actually exists, a reality, a truth whereas fiction is described as without basis in reality, a fantasy. These concepts apply in science and what is more is that it is possible to move from a fantasy to a fact in some cases when new discoveries are made and what was a fiction can be proved to be a fact. This does not happen all the time! it can also be said that the opposite occurs, where a science fact (which was believed to be true at the time) is shown to be false.

Some examples:

  • In Star Trek the use of the communicator before the technology for wireless communication
  • In Victorian times it was considered fact that we are surround by a substance called "The Aether" - in reality it was proven that it doesn't exist.

Remember, all scientific theory is just that - theory. However, if you keep throwing different experiments at the theory and it holds up, you have more confidence. However, one day could come that an experiment is undertaken that disproves the theory. For example - gravity, let go of a ball and it falls but it is still classed as a theory, similarly Darwin's evolution has withstood every test that has been through at it over the last 100 years!
