1 May 2026 - May Day

It's May Day and here's a beautiful AI generated image of the May Day Queen, set during the actual time period. It was a joyful featival at the start of Spring and captures the renewal of life.

The May Day Queen is a young girl chosen for her innocence, purity, and beauty. She was dressed in a flowing white gown and with flowers in her hair. The villagers dance, play music, and weave ribbons around the maypole.

When, 13th–15th centuries, so quite a while ago, and yet May Day celebrations continue in the UK to this day. Amazing, and rather lovely that this ancient pagan rites connects into a communal Christian-era celebration.

I should mention that Beltane, as this overlaps in time, but they stem from different cultural roots. Beltane’s fire rituals were meant to appease nature and ensure a good harvest, while May Day evolved into a village celebration and less about gods.

Beltane is a theme from the famous 1973 film, The Wicker Man, but what did they get right and what did they change?

What they got right was the jumping over the fire, that it was undertaken at night and that it involved nature. What did they changed was the need for the people taking part to do so naked, or get involved in sexual activity. Now I wonder why they made that change?
