Constantine (2005)
Let’s dive into the smoky, supernatural depths of Constantine (2005), where angels wear suits, demons lurk in alleyways, and Keanu Reeves broods like no one else can.
John Constantine isn’t your average exorcist. He’s a chain-smoking occult detective with the rare ability to see the hidden world of half-angels and half-demons walking among us. Damned for a past suicide attempt, he’s trying to earn his way into Heaven by banishing Hell’s minions back to the abyss. But Heaven isn’t exactly handing out redemption points for self-serving heroics.
The story kicks off when LAPD detective Angela Dodson seeks Constantine’s help to investigate her twin sister’s mysterious death. What starts as a suicide case quickly spirals into a cosmic conspiracy involving the Spear of Destiny, the archangel Gabriel (played with icy elegance by Tilda Swinton), and Mammon—the son of Lucifer—who’s itching to break into the mortal realm.
The film blends noir vibes with theological horror, painting Los Angeles as a battleground between divine forces. Constantine’s allies include the streetwise Chas (Shia LaBeouf), the mystical Papa Midnite (Djimon Hounsou), and a few relics that would make Indiana Jones jealous. And when Lucifer himself (Peter Stormare, in a gloriously unhinged performance) finally shows up, it’s not with fire and brimstone—it’s with a white suit and a devilish grin.
Though it strayed from the comic’s British roots, Constantine carved out its own cult following thanks to its moody visuals, philosophical undertones, and Keanu’s deadpan charm.
I also loved how they did the devil...
